CANBERRA, Australia (ABC) ---- Australian Federal Labor and Liberal MPs have met in Canberra for the first time since the election.
Labor MPs gave Prime Minister Julia Gillard a standing ovation, with caucus chairman Daryl Melham saying it was a significant occasion for new MPs.
It was the first meeting of the Labor caucus since Kevin Rudd was replaced as prime minister in June.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott welcomed new Liberal MPs to parliament, telling them he knew they would “do Australia proud.”
He used his address to the party room to make special mention of Western Australian MP Ken Wyatt - the first Indigenous Member to be voted to the House of Representatives.
He also paid tribute to new Queensland MP Wyatt Roy, the youngest person ever to be elected to the Federal Parliament.
Mr Abbott said the Coalition was a united team that was determined to make Australia better.
“We are united in our values, we are united in our faith in ourselves and in our country,” he said.“We have not become a government, but we have made our country proud of the Liberal and the National parties. “I think we have done ourselves proud and we will do our country proud over the next three years.”
