SUVA, Fiji (PACNEWS/MINFO) --- Fiji’s Cabinet has approved the realignment of its foreign missions in line with its revised foreign policy priorities.
It has approved the establishment of new diplomatic missions in Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil next year, according to a government information release.
Since 2006, political developments have necessitated a critical internal review of aspects of Fiji's foreign policies, said the country’s foreign affairs minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.
“Fiji’s relations with her traditional allies including the regional organisations, and certain international organisations, have largely been negatively impacted due to discriminating and isolationist policies imposed by them,” added Ratu Inoke.
Looking outside Fiji’s traditional partners was forced by the changing policies towards Fiji from its neighbours and key regional and international organisations.
Ratu Inoke said the opening of new diplomatic missions in Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil will be priority in 2011 with diplomatic representation and deployment of staff.
Fiji has recently joined the Non Alligned Movement (NAM), an organisation whose members are not aligned to any major power bloc and represents 118 sovereign countries.
Currently, Fiji has diplomatic representation in 10 countries and at the United Nations in New York.
