CANBERRA, Australia (ABC) ---- Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Greens have signed a formal deal to join forces as Labor tries to secure a parliamentary majority.
The Greens senators and new Lower House MP Adam Bandt held their first party room meeting yesterday.
Now it is understood they have struck a deal with Labor that said they would support a Gillard government.
The deal will draw the Labor bloc level with the Coalition in the House of Representatives, with 73 seats each.
The Coalition total includes Western Australia National Tony Crook, who has not yet confirmed that he will vote with the Coalition.
Greens leader Bob Brown will announce details of the deal shortly.
Meanwhile, Hobart-based Independent Andrew Wilkie said he is still hopeful of striking a deal with Labor, even though he has rejected what the Prime Minister has offered so far.
Mr Wilkie said his main priorities are funding for the Royal Hobart Hospital and limits on poker machines.
He has told ABC Local Radio he hopes to meet Julia Gillard for more talks about the Labor package.
βIt is unsatisfactory. I'll be back in touch with her today or tomorrow to talk some more,β he said.
βI am flying to Canberra today to have a follow up meeting I expect with the Opposition Leader. I'm still hoping to get this wrapped up as quickly as possible.β
