800 homes, buildings destroyed in Fiji by cyclone Tomas

An exact total of 799 structures including homes were either partly damaged or completely destroyed in Fiji’s northern and eastern divisions during the height of Cyclone Tomas.

SUVA , Fiji ----- An exact total of 799 structures including homes were either partly damaged or completely destroyed in Fiji’s northern and eastern divisions during the height of Cyclone Tomas. Disaster Management operations officer Anthony Blake has confirmed that of this number, 376 were destroyed and 423 were damaged. DISMAC has come up with the following figures: • Qamea and Taveuni - 89 structures destroyed, 240 damaged including two schools; • Gau - 3 structures destroyed, 23 damaged including a health centre and community hall; • Nairai - 3 structures destroyed, 17 damaged including one school; • Batiki - no buildings destroyed, 3 damaged; • Koro -7 structures destroyed, 26 damaged including one school; • Vanuabalavu – 205 destroyed, 4 damaged; • Matuku – 5 destroyed, none damaged; • Totoya – 14 destroyed, 11 damaged including one school; • Cicia – 8 destroyed, 9 damaged plus one school; • Ono – 6 destroyed, 3 damaged plus one school; • Mago – 2 damaged including a jetty; • Lakeba – 1 destroyed; • Moala – 10 destroyed, 22 damaged; • Yacata – 2 destroyed, 16 damaged plus one school; and • Vanua Levu – 23 destroyed, 40 damaged including 3 churches. Mr Blake said this was report collected from assessment teams on the ground. Meanwhile evacuation centres in all divisions have been closed.
