PAPUA NEW GUINEA. PNG  ----- Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, on Tuesday completed 42 years in Parliament and setting what may become a record unrivalled in the Commonwealth and elsewhere in the world.

And the Chief admitted to staff that he had not thought much about it due to his busy parliamentary schedule when surprised with a chocolate mud cake they presented him with at his parliamentary office.

In his modest but yet chiefly dignified manner the Chief accepted a toast to his milestone and settled quietly with wife Lady Veronica Somare among staff to enjoy some finger foods they had brought.

“Yes, 42 years is a long time,” Sir Michael quietly mused, adding he had been elected to nine parliaments since 1968 when he first became a Member of the House of Assembly.

Before that he was a public servant for 11 years.

Sir Michael then spoke about life as a Member and a leader and about his ups and downs during the years but maintained his pure nationalistic beliefs.

He said leading a country so diverse as PNG was no easy feat and this time development was more accelerated than previously.

National Capital District Governor, Powes Parkop, who was the only MP with Sir Michael paid tribute to the Chief saying his leadership and contribution to the nation was beyond measure.
