CANBERRA, Australia ----- will support New Caledonia's push to become a full member of the Pacific Islands Forum.

New Caledonia's President is leading a delegation that's holding official meetings in Canberra.

New Caledonia is currently an associate member of the Pacific Islands Forum.

It's President, Philippe Gomes, said , the current Forum chair, has agreed to back his country's bid for full membership.

Speaking in Canberra after meetings with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the foreign minister, Stephen Smith, Mr Gomes said nothing should stand in the way of his country joining the Forum.

He's rejected suggestions that New Caledonia's status as a French territory still going through decolonisation was an obstacle.

and New Caledonia have also agreed to greater co-operation on climate issues, including coral reef management and emergency services.
