Tahiti assembly discusses state of women

Tue, 9 Mar 2010
PAPE’ETE, French Polynesia   --- The French Polynesian assembly has been meeting for a debate on the state of women to mark International Women’s Day.

According to RFO radio, one assembly member, Tarita Sinjoux, attributed the success of French Polynesian women to the leader of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party, Gaston Flosse.

However, the gathering was told that much is yet to be achieved as the current government only has two women in its 14-strong line-up, while the previous government, led by Oscar Temaru, had just one woman in its ranks.

This is in contrast to the legally mandated parity in parliamentary elections, which has led to the assembly now having 30 women and 27 men.
