AUCKLAND, NZ ---- Television New Zealand says it’s considering appealing a decision by the Broadcasting Standards Authority that a news item about Samoa breached broadcasting laws.
In the item, broadcast last April, the reporter, Barbara Dreaver, suggested there was widespread presence of gangs, drugs and gun smuggling in Samoa.
This prompted the Samoan government to lodge a complaint, saying the item tarnished the country’s image and would dissuade tourists from visiting.
The BSA found that the report only presented one perspective and ordered TVNZ to publish a summary of its findings and pay costs.
However, TVNZ’s spokesperson, Megan Richards, said TVNZ may appeal as it stands by the substance of the story, and the integrity and professionalism of Ms Dreaver.
