NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga ----- Tonga is to receive a royal visit from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the UAE is on a visit of 12 Pacific countries and arrives in the island kingdom this afternoon. He is travelling on his private Boeing 737-800 plane, accompanied by two smaller security aircraft.

Tonga's Prince Regent, Crown Prince Tupouto'a-Lavaka said the visit reciprocates the visit to Dubai last month of Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele, Lord Tuita and a Tongan contingent who attended the Third Preparatory Commission meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Tonga ratified the IRENA Agreement in November 2009, becoming one of the first nine countries in the world to be a full member of IRENA.

The delegation explored the possibilities of a working relationship between Tonga and the UAE, in transportation, trade, telecommunications, tourism and renewable energy.

During his short visit, the Sheikh will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Prince Regent for a closer working relationship in the area of renewable energy.

HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his entourage will depart Tonga on Wednesday morning.
