PORT MORESBY, PNG ---- Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia has announced the appointment of a leadership tribunal to inquire into allegations of misconduct in office committed by Minister for Finance Patrick Pruaitch. The appointment follows a request by the Acting Public Prosecutor Jim Wala Tamate to the Chief Justice on December 10 last year under Section 27 (2) and (7)(e) of the Organic Law on the Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership. Sir Salamo said the tribunal will be chaired by Justice Gibbs Salika, the Deputy Chief Justice, while the two other members of the tribunal are principal magistrate Peter Toliken and senior magistrate Nerrie Eliakam. He said the tribunal will commence its inquiry on a date and time to be fixed by the tribunal. Mr Pruaitch was referred to the Public Prosecutor for prosecution by the commission for 10 categories of misconduct allegations on July 22, 2009. The matters included allegations of double dipping into different account allowances, misappropriation of district support grants (DSG) and failure to make acquittals between 2001 and 2005. Seven of the charges he faces now relate to 10 categories of misconduct in office as the MP for Aitape-Lumi electorate.
