YAREN, Nauru ------ Nauru has confirmed it will hold a referendum on changes to its constitution at the end of the month. Among the choices for the island nation's 21,000 residents, is removing some of the power of the country's politicians. The referendum will give Nauruans the choice to vote yes or no on four amendments to the country's constitution, including giving themselves the right to vote for the country's president, instead of MP's deciding amongst themselves. Nauru's Justice, Health and Sports minister, Mathew Batsiua, says it is hoped that change will help end the volatile nature of Nauru's politics, which has resulted in around 36 changes of government since independence in 1968. “[I] think this is the right structure to gain political stability, and I think that's what Nauru badly needs,” he said. The referendum follows seven years of discussion and negotiation.
