CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA ---- The  Australian Government has warned it has credible information there may be outbreaks of violence and civil unrest in Fiji, reports Sydney Morning Herald.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) and Trade has upgraded the travel warnings to Fiji's capital, Suva, telling tourists to exercise a “high degree of caution”.

“We continue to receive credible information suggesting that the unresolved political situation could lead without warning to outbreaks of violence and civil unrest, in particular in and around Suva,” the advice reads.

“You should avoid military installations, military activity and concentrations of military personnel.

“There have been many instances of intimidation of individuals and detention for questioning by the RFMF. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has publicly warned of possible bomb attacks,” it said .

Fiji's elected government was overthrown in a military coup last December.Since then the country's rulers have been accused of a host of human rights abuses including killings and sexual assaults of critics.

DFAT advises that the threat level in Fiji has only increased in Suva, and remains at the previous level – “exercise caution” - for other parts of the country.

The move to strengthen the travel warning came on Friday, before Fiji's military government moved on Saturday to lift martial law in the country.
