Telecommunications: PARTICIPANTS SPEAK
What participants think of the workshops

Opetia Liu
Samoa Telecom Ltd

I am thankful to PITA and ITU for hosting this workshop and I was looking forward to meeting colleagues from other countries. The workshop itself gave us an idea of some HR decisions and HR functions in these different companies and this was helpful for us as a way of learning more skills as well as being aware of what was happening around the region, from across Asia and Pacific.

Ali Rustom
Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulations Commission

This has been a very useful workshop in so far as human resource management is concerned. I observe that many situations faced now by the Pacific is also being faced by companies in Bangladesh, where infrastructure changes are going on right now. But change is a reality and in Bangladesh, it has forced us to be more selective where HR is concerned, to try to select the right people for the right role which will help us to be better organised. Change used to happen in a slow motion but now it is very rapid.  The whole world is changing and we, in the Asia Pacific region, should help each other to keep up with what is going on in the developed world.

Pavinee Pornpermook
Telephone Organisation of Thailand

Globalisation has changed telecommunication organisations in the world and it is interesting to observe that what is happening in the South Pacific has already happened in Thailand-the transformation of companies, privatisation, etc. I am glad I could share my experiences, challenges and problem solutions with my Pacific colleagues. Being in  HR, I feel that communication within organisations is important. Supervisors should be able to communicate with their subordinates and they should talk more. Sometimes, I thought: change...ah, it will never come. But then it did come. So if we prepare ourselves well before the change and when we look back, we are glad that we changed.

Tabanteiti Rokoua
Telecom Services Kiribati Ltd

This workshop is about rightsizing and I think it is relevant to my organisation. At TSKL, we are going through a change from an old HR structure to a new one and this workshop has given me some guidelines and management tools that would be very useful and will add value to my organisation.  Kiribati is a small country and we need to have the right people with the right skills and putting them in the right place-only then can you have an idea of the cost to you, and that is important given the limited resources that we have.

Christian Nieng
Solomon Islands Telekom Ltd

A very useful workshop for Solomon Telekom. The main thing we learnt was getting the right people to do the right jobs at the right cost, so it's a very useful knowledge that we need to have in an organisation, especially finding out the right people who would do the right job. New technologies will come and with it, new ideas and we need to assess the competency of our existing staff to face the challenges of an evolving business. We actually did a benchmarking exercise on HR issues with all the participants and I actually looked at what these organisations do within the region and in Asia and then I picked out what I think I should do to improve my system and how I want to try it out or try to implement it. So it's a very useful workshop for me.

Etina Kilisimasi
Tonga Communications Corporations

The most important thing for me was the networking. I got to know my colleagues from other countries and we shared experiences and information, particularly in the HR field. Although I am not new in this area, I found other people's experiences to be very useful for me. The principles of HR management is the same but I think the difference lies in the implementation of these guidelines.
