Cook Islands minister says parliament sitting no threat to PM

The Cook Islands parliament is preparing to sit for the first time since the beginning of the year to pass its latest budget.

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (RADIO AUSTRALIA) --- The Cook Islands parliament is preparing to sit for the first time since the beginning of the year to pass its latest budget. In January, Prime Minister Jim Marurai, facing the threat of a no-confidence vote, said he would not call a meeting of parliament until September. However, parliament must pass a budget by the end of this month to resume the supply of money, because financial reserves have been eaten away in part by costs related to Cyclone Pat. Cook Islands Finance Minister, Wilkie Rasmussen, has told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat he's not expecting anyone to use tomorrow's sitting to pass a vote of no confidence in the government or prime minister. “There really is no point because elections will be called, probably by the end of November," he said. “So the most important thing is for the country to have its funding its supply, and of course we move into the caretaker role until the elections. And I really don't think that motion of no confidence will be put to parliament.
