NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga ----– Tonga is moving ahead with its plans to reduce its heavy dependence on imported fuel.
A meeting to map out an energy road map for the island kingdom is underway on the island of Vava’u attended by development partners and senior government officials.
An Energy Roadmap is the government’s most recent effort to manage its energy costs and reduce Tonga’s heavy dependence on imported fuel oil.
Almost 100 percent of the electricity generation in Tonga is fueled by imported diesel.
The en energy roadmap aims to reduce the vulnerability of the country to future oil price shocks and to reduce the cost of electricity to the people, while meeting the objectives of increasing access to quality electricity supply in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Dr Sevele’s government has set a target of 50 percent of electricity generation from renewable sources within three years, said a government statement.
